All 4 times i used Bumgenius All-in-1, it leaked from the sides.
My mattress is soaked with pee. I am upset. The bumgenius didn’t come cheap!
Am I doing something wrong here? it’s not a lot of pee somemore, it’s just one pee and it leaked. I do put a nappy liner in, is it necessary? Maybe a mommy can enlighten me? I have read up on CD but still, i still don’t understand why it leaked.
(update: thanks to MieVee for her very detailed posting on how to solve this problem here)
Sounds like repellent issue from:
(a) insufficient prewashing: usually I prewash new diapers separately. If you have a new stash, prewash in one load, minimal CD-safe detergent. Dry. Repeat prewash another 2 times.
(b) detergent buildup from using too much detergent during prewash or regular laundry: if so, need to stripwash. After that, use 1/4 -1/2 of recommended amt of detergent to wash each load.
(c) repellent from non-CD-friendly diaper cream buildup: need to stripwash (since you’re using liner, this is a low possibility)
Liner is necessary only when using diaper cream or you’re expecting a messy poo outdoors. Otherwise, I use CD without liner.
Simple stripwash method:
- 1/2 to 1 pail of warm water, add some dishwashing detergent (I use Pigeon baby bottle wash), agitate
- handwash each diaper with repellent issue: rub any layer which is supposed to touch pee (rub fabric against fabric). For pocket diaper, turn it inside out and rub too
- rinse at least 3 times until no more soapy dishwashing detergent bubbles can be felt
- to be safe, throw into washing machine for 1 more rinse. Spin dry. Hang dry.
Try using diaper again. Hopefully repellent issue is gone.
Tip when trying new cloth diapers: I lay a few layers of towel or traditional square nappy under baby’s bums. This prevents wetting mattress, carseat, our clothes, etc. After you’re experienced with using CD, leakage should be fairly rare.
